You should upsize or downsize according to the height of the child. This will ensure the thobe is long enough to finish between the ankles and the calf.
Select the size at the start of the age recommendation for a fit that is closer to the ankle bone, or select a size at the end of the age recommendation for a fit that is higher up the ankle/calf. For example, a 4 year-old should choose size 6 if they want the thobe to finish by the ankle bone, or a size 4 if they want it to finish higher up the leg.
